Great South Bay Music Festival

By Bo Dermont
3 minute 07/07/2011 Share

Peace and Love will never die! With what looks to be a veritable buffet of music and entertainment geared toward fans of country/western, rock ‘n’ roll, funk and jazz, comes The Great South Bay Music Festival! Between July 15 and 17, the Shorefront Park in Patchogue will bring us over 45 performers on three stages, along with a multitude of arts and crafts vendors. Among the acts, you may recognize names such as Electric Hot Tuna and David Bromberg. With a full schedule of good vibrations, this festival will feature both national and international acts and local performers. Between the All-American music and the general festival vibe will be a selection of food that sounds quite appealing. Judging from their website, the American classics—burgers and hot dogs will make this festival into more of a county fair. I’m not complaining. [expand]

If you like groovy, brassy funk with a twist of the extraordinary, check out Funkin’ A. The musicians are a self-described group of “eclectic groove conductors.”

If you want to feel the star power at this festival, check out Electric Hot Tuna. The two founding members of this classic rock standard were once involved in the pioneering rock outfit Jefferson Airplane. After 35 years, Hot Tuna continues to perform their awe-inspiring, 4- to 6-hour long sets to audiences around the world. They will only perform for an hour and a half at the Great South Bay, but that will certainly be enough to have the crowd roaring for more enormous sound from these legends.

Finally, the group that fans of southern rock really won’t want to miss will be .38 Special. Another group of rockers that have stayed together for over 30 years. The band has never abandoned its roots in southern rock and country, even as it began to climb the charts. #1 hits include 1982’s “Caught Up In You” and 1983’s “If I’d Been the One.”

See you there!
