Southampton Assessor Sending Out Notices

By Desirée Keegan
2 minute 04/16/2019 Share

Southampton Town’s assessor’s office will be mailing out 2019 assessment notices. If a homeowner receives a notice, it will indicate that there has been a change in assessment.

Possible reasons for assessment increases include new construction or renovation, missing or incomplete inventory from a prior year, changes in market condition — a sales period from July 1, 2017 to June 30, 2018 is used to determine this — and/or expired prior year court decisions.

If there are questions about the reassessment, or if a homeowner would like to discuss his or her assessment, the assessor can be reached at 631-283-6020. The town will be able to provide information on what next step, if any, would need to be taken. Office hours are Monday to Friday, 8:30 AM to 4 PM.

Assessment increases town-wide could possibly have a minimal impact. Typically, when all property values increase, a resident may see either a slight increase, decrease, or no change in his or her taxes. If school and municipal budgets remain stable with no increase in their tax levies, there could possibly be a decrease in taxes.

If a homeowner believes his or her 2019 assessed value is not reflective of the market value as of July 1, 2018, he or she may want to file a grievance. Information on how to file a grievance will be available with his or her notice.

This year, Southampton is offering an online grievance submission portal. Beginning April 22, information will be made available on the town website at www.southamptontownny.gov.
