Child Safety Seat Check in Bridgehampton on Saturday

The Southampton Town police will be at Kmart in the Bridgehampton Commons to check child safety seats are installed properly on Saturday, the conclusion of the national Child Passenger Safety Week.

Traffic crashes are a leading cause of death for children, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, which  said that from 2014 to 2018, there were 3,315 deaths of children younger than 13 killed who were passengers in vehicles. In 2018, about one-third of the children younger  than 13 who were killed in passenger vehicle crashes nationwide were not restrained in car seats, booster seats, or seat belts.  When used correctly, car seats reduce the risk of fatal injury by 71% for infants and by 54% for toddlers in passenger vehicles, the NHTSA said.

According to police, 70% of child safety seats installed incorrectly. Town officers with the town police as well as the Quogue Village police, will be on hand to check this for parents, free of charge from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.

Kmart is offering 20% off the original price of car seats for the event.
