Update: Man Killed in Jamesport House Fire
Update, 3:15 p.m.: A man died in a house fire in Jamesport early Sunday morning, Suffolk County police confirmed.
Suffolk County Police Homicide Squad and Arson Section detectives are investigating the fire at 66 St. Mary’s Drive. Riverhead police and the Jamesport Fire Department received the call at 4:12 a.m.
The man, who has yet to be identified, was found dead inside after police extinguished the flames.
The cause of the fire is under investigation, but police said it does not appear criminal.
Detectives are asking anyone with information on this incident to call the county homicide squad at 631-852-6392.
Originally, 9:16 a.m.: Firefighters from four fire departments battled an early morning house fire in Jamesport on Sunday. It was not immediately clear if the occupant made it out of the house, which was destroyed by the flames.
Riverhead Town police called the Suffolk County Police Department’s arson squad to the St. Mary’s Drive property to help investigate the origin of the fire.
At about 4:20 a.m., the Jamesport Fire Department responded to a report of the fire and found the house fully engulfed in flames. Firefighters were able to keep the flames from spreading to other nearby homes. The intense heat begun to melt the siding on a neighbor’s house and damaged a vehicle in a neighboring driveway, firefighters reported.
Jamesport fire chiefs called for assistance from the Riverhead, Mattituck and Cutchogue. The Riverhead Volunteer Ambulance Corps were on the scene with ambulances from Mattituck and Cutchogue. The Southold Fire Department stood-by at Jamesport Fire Department.
No injuries to firefighters were reported.
Only two exterior walls and the chimney remained standing. A car, which had been parked in what was the garage, was also destroyed.
The property is located on a dead-end street off Peconic Bay Boulevard, near South Jamesport Beach.
Crime scene tape was put up around the house as investigators got to work trying to determine the cause.
